Pelvic Floor Therapy Program

What is pelvic floor dysfunction?

The pelvic floor is a group of muscles that provide support for the pelvic organs, such as the bladder, rectum, uterus, and/or prostate. These muscles, when functioning without impairment, help control functions of the bowel and bladder including maintaining continence and fully emptying the bowel and bladder. They also play a role in maintaining balance and stability. The pelvic floor muscles can exhibit dysfunction should these muscles become tight, weak, and/or have poor coordination.

What is pelvic floor therapy?

Pelvic floor physical therapy (PFPT)  is a specialization of physical therapy designed to identify and address pelvic floor conditions. Some individuals have difficulty with bowel and bladder control, leading to daily challenges. Toileting problems and similar issues in childhood may continue into adulthood. To address this, PFPT identifies specific impairments and designs a personalized plan to normalize bowel and bladder function.

How can pelvic floor therapy help?

Our providers work in conjunction with our Physical Therapist, Heather Walker, who specializes in treating pelvic floor conditions. Heather will meet with the patient (and guardian, if under 18) to review medical history, symptoms, and goals for treatment. During the initial evaluation, she will examine the patient’s strength, range of motion, muscle flexibility, posture, movement patterns, and pelvic/trunk stability. Based on this assessment, she will identify which treatment interventions will best address the impairments.
