Shearwave (elastography) is a test to check the elasticity of the liver. This is a non-invasive and painless method of assessing liver tissue stiffness with ultrasound and can help your provider diagnosis, stage, and monitor liver conditions.
The provider may order this test if they suspect that you/your child may have liver fibrosis. Liver fibrosis is the formation of an abnormal amount of scar tissue in the liver due to chronic liver injury or inflammation. The fibrosis causes no symtoms, but can impact the function of the liver and lead to serious complications such as cirrhosis, liver failure, and/or liver cancer.
