If you are formula-feeding your baby you will want to follow these important tips. First, make sure he is eating about every three hours in the beginning. He will eat two to three fluid ounces of formula during each feeding which will take about 20 to 30 minutes. Be sure to watch for his cues. When he is full he may turn his head or fall asleep. By six months of age, he should be eating about six to eight fluid ounces for a total of four or five feedings a day.Make sure the formula is flowing from the nipple at the right speed. If he is gulping or choking, the formula may be coming out to fast. On the other hand, if he is sucking very hard or acts fussy, it may be coming out too slow. To test the flow, turn the bottle upside down and you should see a few drops come out of the nipple. Babies will swallow air during a feeding so make sure you are burping. The best way to feed your baby is to find a comfortable spot for yourself. Be sure to support his head and cradle his body in the crook of your arm. Be sure to keep his head higher than his tummy to avoid liquid draining into his ear and decrease his risk of choking. Never prop the bottle. At first, your baby’s stomach is small and will only hold a small amount of formula. As your baby grows so does his stomach which in turn will result in longer periods between feedings. Soon his sleep and eating patterns will adjust and become more regular. If your baby’s height and weight is increasing steadily then he is getting enough to eat. Your Pediatrician will be able to help you with this. If your baby is happy between feedings, having six or more wet diapers a day and has frequent stools, chances are he is getting enough to eat. Remember, the more you get to know your baby the more you will know his feeding habits.
