Allergen Avoidance

Small Changes Can Make a Big Difference!

At Allergy for Kids, we believe education and prevention are an important part of helping children manage allergy symptoms and feel their best. Reducing exposure to environmental allergens can help improve comfort, decrease symptoms, support better sleep, and reduce the need for medications.
Our Allergy Avoidance Program provides families with practical, realistic strategies to help reduce allergen exposure at home, school, and on the go.
Consistent allergen reduction strategies may help improve your child’s quality of life and daily comfort.

Common Environmental Allergens

Pollen (Trees, Grasses & Weeds)

Pollen is one of the most common causes of seasonal allergies in East Tennessee.
Helpful strategies may include:
Monitoring pollen counts
Knowing peak seasons for each pollen
Keeping windows closed during high pollen days
Showering and changing clothes after outdoor play
Using HEPA air filtration when appropriate

Dust Mites

Dust mites are microscopic allergens commonly found in bedding, mattresses, pillows, and carpeted areas.
To reduce dust mite exposure:
Use allergen-proof mattress and pillow covers
Wash bedding/stuffed animals weekly in hot water
Removing Carpet when possible
Avoid Ceiling Fans
Reduce indoor humidity
Dust daily with damp cloth or dusting products
Vacuum regularly using HEPA filtration

Mold

Mold thrives in damp environments and may worsen allergy and asthma symptoms.
Ways to reduce mold exposure include:
Quickly fixing leaks or water damage
Using dehumidifiers when needed
Keeping indoor humidity below 50%

Cleaning visible mold safely and promptly

Pet Dander

Even beloved family pets can contribute to allergy symptoms in sensitive children. On occasion, the best avoidance measure is to remove the animals from the home. Animal particles are difficult to remove from the home and can take months to fully eliminate. If it is not possible to remove the animal from the home then there are measures that can be taken to limit exposure.
Helpful recommendations may include:
Keeping pets out of bedrooms
Frequent bathing and grooming
Regular vacuuming and cleaning
Using HEPA air purifiers
