Calprotectin is a calcium binding protein that is found in all body fluids in proportion to the level of inflammation present. Your doctor may order this test for you in order to learn if you are experiencing gastrointestinal inflammation. The results of this test will help your doctor to know how to treat you and/or if further testing is needed.
What the test involves
This test involves giving a stool sample that will be tested for calprotectin. Calprotectin is an indicator of intestinal inflammation such as Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and may also be helpful in determining disease activity and risk of relapse in IBD.
You should avoid taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDS) for 2 days prior to taking the test (aspirin, ibuprophen, naproxen etc). Make sure all of your medications are ok with your doctor prior to the test. You will simply provide a stool sample to your doctor that he/she will then send to a laboratory.
After the Test
Results will be discussed and appropriate treatment carried out.
