Lubiprostone – (Amitiza) is a laxative used to relieve constipation and make it easier to have bowel movements. Lubiprostone is also used to treat irritable bowel syndrome with constipation in women who are at least 18 years old.

How should it be used?

Swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew.
Take this medication with food in the morning and in the evening.
Take it around the same time each day.
Special Precautions/Instructions

Before you begin taking this medicine tell you doctor about any of the following:

Medicines (including over the counter), vitamins, herbal products, and supplements that you take.
Have a history of blockage in your digestive system like:
Hernia,
Gallstones
Crohn’s disease
Herschsprung’s disease
Impacted bowel movement
Diverticulitis
polyps
Have severe diarrhea
Are pregnant, plan on becoming pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Side Effects

The most common side effects include: diarrhea, headache, nausea, and abdominal pain. If you experience shortness of breath, contact your doctor.

Contact your doctor immediately if you have signs of an allergic reaction including:

Diarrhea
Feeling sick
Fever, shivering/chills, rash
Muscle and bone pain
Kidney problems (changes in the amount of urine or color of urine)
Tiredness, dizziness
Itching
Swelling
Trouble breathing
Storage Conditions

This medication should be stored at room temperature.

Emergency/Overdose

Call the national poison control center 1-800-222-1222 or 911 in the event of overdose. Symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, fever, chills, and other signs of infection.

Pediatric Use

The safety and efficacy of this drug in pediatric patients have not yet been established.

Amitiza Ingredients

8 mcg capsules contain: lubiprostone, medium-chain triglycerides, gelatin, sorbitol, ferric oxide, titanium dioxide, and purified water.

24 mcg capsules contain: lubiprostone, medium-chain triglycerides, gelatin, sorbitol, FD&C Red #40, D&C Yellow #10, and purified water.
