Pyrantel (Pin-X) is a chewable tablet that works by paralyzing the nervous system of intestinal parasites (worms). The worm is killed and passes in the stool.

Important information about pinworms

A pinworm is a small round worm that lives in the body of other animals. They are ¼ to ½ inches long and have white bodies and pointed tails. There are several kinds of pinworms, but only one kind, Enterobius vermicularis, commonly infects people. The worms can usually be seen while the person is sleeping when the worm leaves the body thru the anus and sits on the skin.

The young worms live in the upper part of the large intestine. When they are ready to lay eggs, they crawl down the rectum and out of the anus at night. They lay eggs on the skin around the anus. This causes swelling and severe itching.

The eggs fall off into the bedding or clothing and can be picked up under the fingernails while scratching. If the eggs are swallowed, they reach the intestine and become adult pinworms. To avoid spreading, all areas should be cleaned.
