Mesalamine (Apriso) is used to treat ulcerative colitis, protitis, and proctosigmoiditis. It is also used to prevent the symptoms of ulcerative colitis from coming back (remission). It is a type of medication called a 5-aminosalicylic acid or 5-ASA. 5-ASA’s are anti-inflammatory used to decrease the irritation of the colon.

How should it be used?

Apriso is the first once daily 5-ASA using both a delayed and extended release delivery system and works in the entire colon.

Take by mouth each day in the morning with a full glass of water.
Do not crush, break, or chew the capsule. It can be taken with or without food.
This medicine is made to start working after it passes through your stomach and into your intestines.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you can unless it is almost time for your regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Special Precautions / Instructions

Tell your doctor if you have:

A stomach condition (pyloric stenosis)
If you are allergic to sulfasalazine (Azulfidine)
A heart condition such as congestive heart failure
Kidney or liver disease
A problem (hypersensitive) to sallicylates, aminosalicylates, or anything that is in Apriso:
Active ingredients in each capsule are: mesalamine USP.

Inactive ingredients in each capsule are: colloidal silicon dioxide, magnesium stearate, microcrystalline cellulose, simethicone emulsion, ethylacrylate / methylmethacrylate copolymer nonxynol 100 dispersion, hypromellose, methacrylic acid copolymer, talc, titanium dioxide, triethyl citrate, aspartame, anhydrous citric acid, povidone, vanilla flavor, and edible black ink.

If you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
Side Effects

The most common side effects are:

headache,
diarrhea,
upper abdominal pain,
nausea,
nasopharyngitis (inflammation of the nasal passages and of the upper part of the pharynx),
flu and flu-like illness, and sinusitis.
Storage Conditions

Store this medication at room temperature away from moisture and heat.

Keep out of reach of children.

Emergency / Overdose

Call the national poison control center 1-800-222-2122 or 911 in the event of overdose.

Symptoms of overdose include hematemesis (vomiting blood), rapid breathing (tachypnea or hyperpnea), tinnitus (ringing in the ears), deafness, lethargy, seizures, confusion, or dyspnea (difficulty breathing).

Pediatric Use

The safety and efficacy of this drug in pediatric patients, age 17 and younger, has not been established.
