ACCEPTING NEW PATIENTS
I am happy to be a part of the GI for Kids team. Although I am new to the practice, I am not new to the area of healthcare and clinical trials. I am a registered nurse with years of hospital experience on a mother-baby unit caring for both mothers and newborns after delivery. Making sure babies were feeding well and having bowel movements was a big part of that care. Healthy eating leads to a healthy GI from the very beginning! I later accepted a position as a Nurse Research Coordinator for both academic and clinical trials for women and infants. It was in that position I learned first-hand how valuable it is to have physicians and drug companies looking for better, safer, or new ways to treat patients. I now get to expand on my experience with clinical trials at GI for Kids.
Participating in clinical trial research is an exciting addition to the practice that will provide many years of new treatments and medications not only to our patients here in East Tennessee but also worldwide! In our clinical trials at GI for Kids, participants will be using medications that have already been approved by the FDA, but for adults. The pharmaceutical companies now need FDA approval for the same medication but for children to use. This means they will be using smaller doses of these drugs based on age and weight (just like they had to do for Tylenol® many years ago). Our patients and caregivers who participate in a study will receive study treatment at no cost, and at times may also be paid for their time and travel. Frequent visits back to the office during the study make sure their health is closely monitored and that all study instructions are followed. It is an exciting time to be involved in research!
I graduated from Berry College with a bachelor’s degree in public relations, and some years later, from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s degree in nursing. I have four children, two out of the nest, and two still nesting. I enjoy photography, gardening, hiking, camping and hanging out with family and friends.
