Nizatidine (Axid) decreases the amount of acid in the stomach (histamine-2 blocker). Axid also treats heartburn and erosive esophagitis caused by GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), a condition where acid backs up from the stomach into the esophagus.

How should it be used?

This medication is available in capsule, tablet, and solution forms.

  • Take with or without food.
  • Take the medicine exactly the way the doctor tells you.
  • Do not take larger or smaller amounts.
  • Measure the liquid medicine with a special spoon (not a regular spoon) used for medicines. If you do not have one, you can buy it at the local drug store.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time to take your regular dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

Special Precautions/Instructions

Before you start taking this medicine tell the doctor about any of the following:

    • Medicines (including over the counter), vitamins, herbal products, and supplements you take.
    • Have any problems taking nizatidine, h2 antagonists, or anything that is in this medicine:

nizatidine, gelatin, pregelatinized starch, dimethicone, starch, titanium dioxide, yellow iron oxide, other inactive ingredients
-150 mg capsule only: magnesium stearate
-300 mg capsule only: croscarmellose sodium, povidone, red iron oxide, and talc

  • Have liver or renal (kidney) problems.
  • Are pregnant, plan on getting pregnant, or breastfeeding.

Side Effects

The most common side effects include: headache, dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, diarrhea, and breast tenderness.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction including:

  • Diarrhea
  • Feeling sick
  • Fever, shivering/chills, rash
  • Muscle and bone pain
  • Kidney problems (changes in the amount of urine or color of urine)
  • Tiredness, dizziness
  • Itching
  • Swelling
  • Trouble breathing

Storage Conditions

This medication should be stored at room temperature. Keep out of reach of children. Protect from sunlight and moisture.


Call the national poison control center 1-800-222-1222 or 911 in the event of overdose. Symptoms of an overdose include vomiting, diarrhea, sore throat, fever, chills, and other signs of infection.

Pediatric Use

The safety and efficacy of this drug in pediatric patients have not been established.
